The guy talks like a PRO

I got home the other night and my wife was watching Seinfeld on DVD. The episode with Milos the crummy tennis pro-shop owner who tricks Jerry into buying a good racket. I think the quote goes “Are you going to hit those balls with that racket?”

“Another game for Milos!!”

I’m going somewhere with this I promise.

How important is it to you that the person that sells you an item is a good cyclist?

You go to an expert, maybe a self proclaimed expert for advice on tires, wheels, a bike, almost every new purchase. After some time and maybe going on a few rides with this person you realize they spend less time on a bike than you.

This person doesn’t train, yet loves dishing out training adive. This person doesn’t race, but loves talking tactics and how strong they are. This person can’t climb, but loves to talk about flying up the hills.

It takes nerve. It reminds me of my younger days. Kids would come to ride my ramp. Only to sit on the deck and watch. They would eventually build their own, it would never see a skateboard get air above the coping.

Posers are everywhere - careful who you put your faith in when dropping big bucks. You could end up buying what ever item they are getting the best deal on this week. Remember, just because it’s on someone elses bike it may not be what you need.

This is why we value opinions based on experience and not pretention. Your personal bike guru. You feel as if you bother him with every question. Yet he never shows it. You cannot place a value on people like this.

Enough of the soap box crapola and onto the work-travel crapola. I’mn heading West on Wed. Off to the desert a place I have never been. Once the work related items are complete I plan to search for singletrack. It will be odd to ride in 100 F weather in October. It will be odd to ride and not have trees surrounding me.

I have a ride planned, a bike reserved and I borrowed a camel back (being I haven’t used one in 10 years). What can i say I’m a bottle guy. Plus having a team car follow you around full of bottles and gear helps. My cameras are charged and my gear is clean. I was brushing dry dirt from my MTb shoes last night when I noticed a toe spike was missing. DAMN! I am out of spares. It must have fallen out when I double flatted on Fri and had to run for a mile next to Ben. I installed a cleat fastener with a washer to seal the hole for now. Spikes on order. Should be in on time for my nest grass crit.

Photos to come as soon as they are taken. Maybe a movie of the festivities.

If you’re in the Pheonix / Scottsdale area come ride with us. More the better.

I was getting tired of people scoffing at my steel Schwinn. I just ordered up a set of streetwrapz for the frame. I will have the last laugh when I pull up rocking a (faux) carbon bike at the donut shop.

    Hey Nick,

I’d like to be there and see how you react to that Arizona heat as soon as you step off that Aero, it’s going to be a shocker, especially after the mild summer yall have had. Have a great time, I love the SW, hell all of the West.

You’re on the money with the heat shock I’m going to experience. The hottest day I remember this year was maybe 85. I’m gonna cook like a good little yankee.
